Michael, Xanthe, George and Georgia. It would be tempting to call My Mercury the very antidote to social media’s musical snippet culture, musicians who feel their way through songs and arrive at something that amalgamate themselves somewhere in the vague Venn diagram that encompasses Michael’s favourite writers; Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy, Adrianne Lenker, Gillian Welch and Feist. There is certainly something almost old-school in their no-rush approach to reaching their musical destination. Music is forever, take your time. Michael is as influenced by the places he’s lived as other music, from Atlantic Canada’s coastline to the rainforests of British Columbia, to Montreal, to the desert of California, and finally to London.
These are Americana-kissed, alt-country imbued, leftfield indie songs. They are also none of these things. They are a new band gloriously out of step, and all the more fascinating for it.
