We are delighted to announce Grassroots as our lead charity partner for TGE20. Based in Brighton and operating nationally, Grassroots is a UK leader in suicide prevention. They support people in the community to develop the skills and confidence needed to save lives through open and courageous conversations.
Suicide is an issue that impacts us all, but is often hidden due to stigma: 1 in 5 people have suicidal thoughts in their lifetime; and 1 in 15 will go on to attempt. We can all develop the skills and confidence needed to help – suicide prevention isn’t just the job of health professionals or ‘experts’. Grassroots believe that we must take a whole community approach, raising awareness and empowering everyone to have the kind of conversations that can save lives.
Over the last 13 years Grassroots has trained over 15,000 people in suicide prevention and mental health awareness. Their award-winning smartphone app Stay Alive has now been downloaded over 110,000 times and has 20,000 active users, with research showing it has helped many people stay safe from suicide.
Stella Comber, Chief Executive of Grassroots, says: “Working with ‘The Great Escape’ is a really an exciting opportunity for Grassroots to raise awareness about suicide in a positive and fresh way. We are already organising regular gigs in Brighton, using music to approach this difficult issue with true hope and optimism. This feels like a natural extension of that work, and will help us reach more people and inspire more life-saving conversations.”
When purchasing festival tickets and conference passes for TGE20, as well as tickets for FIRST FIFTY shows you’ll be given an opportunity to donate to Grassroots.
We’ll be announcing more details of Grassroots plans for TGE20 in the coming months.
